MCC Band & Orchestra presents Odds and Ends

Start Date: 2/27/2024 End Date: 2/27/2024

Start Time: 6:00 PM | End Time: 9:00 PM
Your Partner Agency: N/A
Event Description/Details: Mesa Community College Band, Community & Orchestra Concert Presents Odds and Ends

Feb 27, 2024 at 7 pm at MCC Performing Arts Center

This concert is going to be an evening of great works for Band and Orchestra that just don’t share any common theme to one another. Hence, we’re calling it our “Odds & Ends” Concert! The MCC Community Band is opening up the show with a fantastic J.P. Sousa march, Hands Across the Sea, followed by A Longford Legend, which is a collection of Irish Street Ballades, and then concluding with a not-so-well-known piece by Alfred Reed entitled Alleluia! Laudamus Te, which is joyous and powerful, and will leave you wanting more…….which is good, because next up is the MCC Concert Band! They will be opening with the first movement of Richard Strauss’ Concerto No. 1 for French Horn (arranged for Symphonic Band), which will be featuring MCC student, Cole Evans on French Horn! Next is a new selection that the MCC Concert Band just presented at the AMEA State Conference in a new music reading session called Sailing with Whales by Rossano Gallante. This piece will take you on a journey in search of, and then traveling alongside the mighty Orca Whale on a wild journey within their natural habitat. Next, the band will explore the beautiful, rich sounds that form the “Love Duet” from Howard Hanson’s Merry Mount Suite. There’s only one way to finish off a collection like this….a March! But not another patriotic march…..but a Circus March!!! The Concert Band will conclude with Karl L. King’s classic, Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite!

The "Odds & Ends”continue with our amazing Community Orchestra who will be performing for you the Overture from Otto Nicolai’s opera, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and the Concerto for Alto Trombone and Orchestra featuring MCC student, Chanson Peck! The orchestra will also be premiering the second movement of a new work by MCC student trumpet player and composer, Jacob Bozicevic entitled An American Tapestry. There’s only one way to bring an evening of musical "Odds & Ends” like this to a triumphant close, and that’s with the orchestra’s performance of the Berceuse and Finale from Igor Stravinsky’s classic Firebird Suite. Come out and support the great things that are happening here in the world of MCC Instrumental Music!!!

Desert Echoes Flute Project Concert: For the Birds

Event Location: MCC Performing Arts Center
Start Date: 3/01/2024 End Date: 3/01/2024
Event Frequency: none
Start Time: 6:30 PM | End Time: 9:30 PM

Event Description/Details: MCC Music Department present Desert Echoes Flute Project Concert: For the Birds

March 1, 2024 at 7:30 pm , MCC Performing Arts Center

Join the flutists of Desert Echoes Flute Project in a fun and exciting concert as they celebrate birds. From the opening piccolo duo, Mimic, by Nicole Chamberlain to the humorous closing piece, The Bird Song, by Michael Davis featuring vocalist Stephanie Sadownik lamenting “I wonder why the flutist always has to be the bird”, this concert is for the birds.

Composers have been inspired by birds and imitated bird song for centuries. Perhaps one of the best-known examples is the Goldfinch Concerto by Antonio Vivaldi. There are a flock of other pieces on the program: the happy songbirds heralding spring with all its festiveness in the first movement of Vivaldi’s La Primavera featuring flute soloist Alan J. Tomasetti, The Turtledove in the flashy piccolo solo by Eugène Damaré with soloist Linda Bailey, the lovely Blue Bird from Three Korean Folk Songs arranged by Kelly Via, the delightful and elegant Dance of the Swans from the famous Tchaikovsky ballet Swan Lake, the trills and grace notes of canary chicks enclosed in shells in Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks from Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, and L’Oiseau des Bois by Franz Doppler featuring Amber Walker as the bird (flute) soloist. The DEF Chamber Choir flutists depict an aviary with Bird House by Efraín Amaya and the flutists of DEFproject are Birds of a Feather in Eva Young’s lyrical, aggressive, and rhythmic piece for flute choir. The program wouldn’t be complete without a tribute by the Community Flute Choir to the unofficial mascot of the DEF Project with the playful Tufted Puffin depicted in a movement from Songs of the Ocean by Ryohei Hirose.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Event Location: MCC Performing Arts Center
Start Date: 3/29/2024 End Date: 4/06/2024
Event Frequency: 3-4 shows per week for two weeks
Start Time: 7:30PM | End Time: 10:00PM
Your Partner Agency: The MCC Music Theatre
Event Description/Details: The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

Prices: General Public - $18.00, Senior/Staff/Alumni - $15.00, Student -$12.00, Children 10 years and younger - $10.00

This show contains dark elements and themes and is more mature in nature than the Disney animated film.
