Goals for the TL3C Project Grant:

  • develop highly qualified pre-service teachers who will complete coursework for their full Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement (required in Arizona) and their provisional ESL endorsement prior to transferring to the university to complete their elementary education degree with a full English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual Education (BLE) endorsement
  • train and support higher education faculty in various disciplines who instruct preservice teachers in effective teaching strategies and best practices for diverse learners
  • develop STEM curricula designed for language learners that align to Arizona’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and the newly adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
  • provide training for TLLs, paraprofessionals and preservice teachers to improve best practices for effectively meeting linguistic and academic needs of language learners
  • provide in-class support through trained paraprofessionals and preservice teacher assistants as well as instructional resources, including STEM activities to support curriculum taught

Timelines

Goal 1

Increase the pool of highly prepared teachers of language learners (TLLs) by establishing cohort groups of pre-service teachers

August 2012 Identified connections between TL3C and the MCC Literacy Outreach program for the purpose of recruitment. Established EDU101: Tutor Training and Practicum  as an exploratory course for future teachers.
August 2012 Created the application for perspective TL3C students to include academic and socio-behavioral questions that will promote the pool and retention efforts of future teachers of language learners.
Fall 2012 Created Teaching Second Language Acquisition through STEM academic certificate that promotes high quality teaching and learning for the 21st Century learner through a focus on research-based best practices for academically and linguistically diverse learners. Coursework includes Structured English Immersion Endorsement requirements, Provisional English as a Second Language Endorsement requirements, as well as courses that support inquiry-based STEM education.
August 2012 Created an Edmodo blog that is integrated into EDU101, EDU111 and EDU112 to increase communication among pre-service TL3C students.
October 2012 Created and administered an online survey to all EDU students at MCC to be utilized as a longitudinal survey of future teachers.
December2012 Applied for International Tutor Training Program Certification for EDU101 which required course revisions and the development of real time training. TL3C students will earn this certification upon completion of EDU101aa.
February 2013 Partnered with MCC Outreach Services to coordinate and plan recruitment efforts for the 2013-14AY.
February 2013 Integrated a STEM service-learning project into EDU220: Introduction to English Learners.
March 2013 Submitted a proposal for the Expect More Excellent Tour Arizona to highlight the TL3C project.
June 2013 Pre-service teacher students participated in a study abroad program in Guanajuato, Mexico. The excursion included school visits and integrated academic coursework.
Fall 2014 Expanded Literacy Outreach peer-to-peer tutoring cohorts across eight elementary schools in two high school districts.
February 2014 Offered a Geospatial Training workshop in partnership with the Arizona Geographic Alliance.
February 2014 TL3C pre-service teachers hosted and facilitated sessions for partner-site students to explore science and literacy at the MCC Dr. Seuss Day celebration.
March 2014 TL3C pre-service teachers presented at the National Association for Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) conference.
March 2014 TL3C pre-service teacher students hosted and facilitated a Water Day event for partner-site students to explore science.
April 2014 Conducted classroom presentations in teacher education exploration classes at local high schools.
Spring 2014 Partnered with MCC Athletics, America Reads and GED programs to expand Literacy Outreach and recruit future teachers.
Fall 2014 Integrated tutor certification trainings into weekly TL3C meetings.
November 2014 Pre-service teacher students in EDU233 developed literacy kits with resources to support literacy development and academic language development for ELs and their families. The kits were donated to partner sites.
February 2015 TL3C pre-service teachers hosted and facilitated sessions for partner-site students to explore science and literacy at the MCC Dr. Seuss Day celebration.
March 2015 TL3C pre-service teachers presented at the National Association for Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) conference.
June 2015 Six pre-service teacher students served as paid interns during the TL3C Summer STEM camps for students in grades 3-8 including English learners (ELs).
Fall 2015 Offered EDU111 and EDU112 as explore teaching courses to all eligible students at MCC.
September 2015 Pre-service teacher students created and shared an alter representative of Hispanic great minds in science for the MCC Hispanic Heritage Festival.
November 2015 Established a partnership with Mesa Public Schools and Arizona State University to offer a Grow Your Own program to high school students maximizing dual/concurrent enrollment options andTL3C scholarships to market a pathway for students to earn a Bachelor of Elementary Education and STEM course emphasis.

Goal 2

Train and support in-service TLLs in effective teaching strategies and best practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners

February 2013 Attended the 2013 NABE conference with TL3C Core Team members and teachers and administrators from partner sites. Focus discussions at the end of informational sessions that were shared among group members. Site visits to dual language schools in Florida.
March 2013 Facilitated Engineering is Elementary (EiE) workshops for teachers in the Mesa Public School District.
April 2013 Designed the Educators page of the TL3C website to include current events, resources, a reading list and blog.
April 2013 Facilitated a Spring meeting for teachers and administrators at partner sites as well as the advisory board members and additional consortium participants. NABE representatives were in attendance and a Skype session with Virginia Collier and John Thomas was a major focus. Participants were grouped by similar discipline to share resources and ideas related to dual language and the goals to TL3C.
June 2013 Offered a 4-Day professional development institute for twenty TLLs in partnership with the Arizona Geographic Alliance (AzGA).
June 2013 Facilitated a book discussion for Educating English Learners for a Transformed World by Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas. The authors Skyped into the discussion.
June 2013 TLLs participated in a study abroad program in Guanajuato, Mexico. The excursion included school visits and integrated academic coursework.
August 2013 Facilitated a book discussion for Educating English Learners for a Transformed World by Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas with all teachers at Valley View Elementary School.
August 2013 Established Science Clubs at TL3C partner-sites let by TLLs and pre-service teacher students at MCC.
November 2013 Attended the La Cosecha conference with TLLs from partner sites.
November 2013 Hosted the 1st Annual TL3C Fall Conference at MCC attended by sixty administrators and teachers language learners.
May 2014 Offered a family STEM night at Keller Elementary School.
June 2014 TLLs were provided curriculum training received stipends to facilitate a two-week STEM camp to elementary students including English learners.
June 2015 Offered a 4-Day professional development institute for twenty TLLs in partnership with the Arizona Geographic Alliance (AzGA). An outcome of the institute included the development of fifty peer-reviewed STEM lessons posted on the AzGA website and linked to the TL3C website.
July 2014 Facilitated a book discussion for Diary of a Bilingual School by Sharon Adelman Reyes. The author Skyped into the discussion.
August 2014 Created an application and monitoring process for TLLs to offer STEM clubs on their school campus. The application required identifying major concepts and targeted academic vocabulary that would be assessed with a pre/post common assessment.
September 2014 TL3C partnered with Arizona Language Association (AZLA) to offer a fall conference to more that 225 language teachers.
November 2014 Attended the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) conference with administrators and teachers from partner sites.
Fall 2014 Teacher leaders that completed the AzGA Summer Institute offered professional development sessions to other TLLs and pre-service teacher students.
Fall-Spring 2014-15 Facilitated three professional development sessions to all teachers at Valley View Elementary School in partnership with the Arizona Geographic Alliance. The series demonstrated academic language development through STEM investigations.
March 2015 Attended the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) conference with administrators and teachers from partner sites.
May 2015 Offered an all-day Spring meeting and professional development workshops to administrators and teachers of language learners including dual language immersion programs. Keynote: Dr. Sharon Adelman Reyes.
June 2015 Offered a 7-Day Professional Development (PD) Institute for forty teachers of language learners emphasizing academic language development through STEM investigations. Lead expertise included inquiry, mathematics, pedagogy, technology and instructional design. Integrated EDU111 and ETL211AC coursework into the institute with option for enrollment and additional online requirements complimentary to the PD topics.
Fall 2015 Expanded TL3C partner sites to include ten schools with dual language immersion (DLI) programs. Partner sites committed to piloting the TL3C DLI framework. Incentives include teacher travel, DLI consulting, sponsored Spanish STEM clubs, language proficiency testing and tablets for documenting DLI assurances in practice.
Fall 2015 Facilitated two professional development days for all teachers in grades 3-6 at Keller Elementary School emphasizing academic language development through STEM investigations.
October 2015 Offered a 2-Day conference in partnership with Arizona Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (AZTESOL) to more than 273 P-20 educators. Keynote: H. Douglas Brown.
November 2015 Attended the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)  conference with administrators and teachers from partner sites.

Goal 3

Train and support paraprofessionals in effective teaching strategies and best practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

March 2013 Developed a survey for paraprofessionals working at partner sites to gauge current satisfaction of instructional tools for language learners, interest in professional development opportunities and career goals related to teaching language learners.
Spring 2014 Conducted a series of trainings for all paraprofessionals at Keller Elementary School as an extension of the Literacy Outreach project. Trainings emphasized effective strategies for teaching English learners. Participants could enroll into EDU101 for complimentary online training.
January 2014 Established a partnership with Mesa Public Schools to develop a Grow Your Own program for paraprofessionals to earn teacher certification. The pilot semester included recruitment meetings and a program of study with scholarships for full and part-time participants. 

Goal 4

Train and support higher education faculty (in various disciplines) who instruct preservice teachers in effective teaching strategies and best practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

November 2012 TL3C Core Team participation in CCSS training for college faculty.
November 2012 Presented at the Comparative Education & International Society (CEIS) Conference sponsored by Arizona State University Transborder Studies to inform the global community about the goals of TL3C in an effort to expand our consortium.
Fall 2012 Created a Next Generation Educator academic certificate program on standards-based teaching and learning that includes coursework for cross-disciplinary faculty to develop knowledge and skills to effectively promote learning for the 21st Century learner. Coursework focuses on best practices for teaching 21st Century learners, with an emphasis on effective course/curriculum design aligned to competencies/standards, outcomes-based assessment, and educational applications of technology.
December 2012 Facilitated our Fall12 advisory board meeting to identify goals among board members specific to language learners and make connections to the TL3C Goals.
January 2013 Partnered with the CTL to develop a protocol for K-12 and higher education faculty that guides lesson design and delivery. The protocol is based on the InTask standards and references rubrics created by C. Danielson, R. Marzano and SIOP. Development period: January-April 2013
March 2013 Presented at the NACCTEP 2013 conference to inform other community colleges about the goals of TL3C in an effort to expand our consortium.
April 2013 Shared information about TL3C Project through presentation at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) titled Creating Pathways for Bilingual/ESL Endorsed Pre-Service Teachers in Arizona's English-only Political Context. Learned about best practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
April 2013 Faculty development for lesson design and delivery using the protocol.
June 2013

Offered a featured professional development session on effective lesson design and delivery strategies during the Mesa Community College Title III Summer Institute for all Math faculty.

April 2014 Developed a course survey and iiReview process based on the Route 21 rubric for research-based design and delivery methods for effective instruction. Piloted the rubric into EDU courses.
May 2014 Offered a featured professional development session on effective lesson design and delivery strategies during the MCC Camp Innovate series.
June 2014 Offered a featured professional development session on effective lesson design and delivery strategies during the Mesa Community College Title III Summer Institute for Reading faculty.
Fall-Spring 2014-15 Offered Gold Star design series workshops to faculty at MCC emphasizing course design and outcomes based learning reflective of the Quality Matters framework.
February 2015 Developed the 10 Fidelity Assurances for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs based on Utah’s DLI model.
July 2015 Identified college faculty to lead a technology-focused STEM camp for students in grades 6-8 including ELs. Pre-service teacher students served as interns in the camp infusing instructional strategies and support for effective instruction.
Fall 2015 Presented the Crossroads website (technology + pedagogy) to adjunct faculty at Estrella Mountain Community College and during the Student Success and STEMtech conferences.
October 2015 Offered a 2-Day conference in partnership with Arizona Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (AZTESOL) to more than 273 P-20 educators. Keynote: H. Douglas Brown.
October 2015 TL3C Administrator was elected AZTESOL 2nd Vice President. TL3C Director was elected AZTESOL Special Interest Group (SIG) Coordinator.
November 2015 Established a Family/Community Liaison role to offer parent forums and trainings relative language programs. STEM related trainings will be offered at partner sites and on the college campus.
March 2016 Presented at the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) conference on the TL3C DLI model and Summer Institute for TLLs.
