2014 Study Abroad Scholarships

The International Education Office offers study abroad scholarships to provide financial support to students who wish to participate in a Mesa Community College (MCC) sponsored study abroad program.  All scholarship opportunities are available to Mesa Community College students who wish to participate in a MCC sponsored study abroad program.  There are two separate scholarship applications.  To apply for the Merit-Based Study Abroad Scholarship, you must complete one application.  The application for the Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship and the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship is combined in one application.  Each scholarship has different requirements. Please read the criteria carefully. Students may qualify for more than one scholarship based on their eligibility.

AWARD AMOUNT: Total amount of scholarship award per student may not exceed $1,000. (This may include a combination of merit-based and need-based scholarships.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the merit-based and need-based scholarship(s).

Deadline to submit all Study Abroad Scholarships: Scholarships are closed.

Before you get started:

  1. Get admitted to MCC
    • You will be prompted to enter your Student ID Number. You can find your Student ID Number in your My.maricopa.edu account.
    • Go to My.maricopa.edu to apply for a MEID.
    • You will be prompted to enter your Student ID Number. You can find your Student ID Number in your My.maricopa.edu account.
  2. Complete the Student Declaration Form at MCC to update your residency status.
  3. Before applying for any study abroad scholarship(s), you MUST have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  4. Complete the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2014 (at least 30 days before the scholarship deadline of March 2, 2014) to maximize your scholarship opportunities.  NOTE: The FAFSA is required for the Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship and the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship applications.
  5. Once you begin your scholarship application, you will NOT be able to save your work.  If you log out without submitting your scholarship application, you will lose all your information.
    • You will be required to complete an essay question and/or personal statement of financial need. You can complete the information requested in MS Word or another similar word processor, then copy and paste it in the space provided. We recommend that you complete the essay question and/or personal statement of financial need before you begin the application. If you log out from the scholarship application, you will lose all your information.
  6. ONCE YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.  Please check all your answers before you submit your application.
  7. Incomplete scholarship applications will automatically be disqualified.
  8. All scholarships awarded are conditional upon your full participation in your study abroad program.  If you withdraw from your program, for any reason (voluntary or involuntary), all awards will be revoked. If your award is revoked after funds have been disbursed to you, you will be billed for the amount of the award through your My.maricopa.edu student account.

How can I use my Study Abroad Scholarship(s)?

The Study Abroad Scholarships may be used to fund program fees and/or tuition and registration fees. The maximum award amount per student is $1000.  This may include a combination of merit-based and need-based scholarships.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the merit-based and need-based scholarship(s).  Applications will be scored based on the following criteria:

2014 Merit-Based Study Abroad Scholarship

AWARD AMOUNT VARIES: Total amount of scholarship award per student may not exceed $1,000. (This may include a combination of merit-based and need-based scholarship.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the merit-based and need-based scholarship(s).

Criteria:

  • Must have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • Must complete essay (4500 character limit) topic that address the scenario below:
    • Suppose you have $1,000 to spend while traveling for one month in the country of your study abroad program. Describe the cultural, historical, and iconic sites you would visit and explain the academic/educational reasons for visiting these sites. Be sure to explain the limitations and challenges (e.g., linguistic, cultural, financial, logistical, etc.) you would reasonably expect to face in accomplishing your goal.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. Refer to acceptable documents to establish lawful presence (www.maricopa.edu/residency/lawfulpresdocs.php).

2014 Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship

AWARD AMOUNT VARIES: Total amount of scholarship award per student may not exceed $1,000. (This may include a combination of merit-based and need-based scholarship.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the merit-based and need-based scholarship(s).

Criteria:

  • Must have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application.
  • Must complete the Personal Statement of Financial Need (3000 character limit) that address both questions below:
    • How are you currently financing your education (e.g. help from family, financial aid, taking out student loans, working, etc.)? What difficulties have you faced in paying for your education?
  • Must complete the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  You should file a FAFSA at least 30 days before the study abroad scholarship deadline.
  • Scoring is based on whether the student is a current MCC student, a MCCCD student, an in-state student, or an out-of-state student. Priority may be given to current MCC students.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. See acceptable documents to establish lawful presence (www.maricopa.edu/residency/lawfulpresdocs.php).

2014 Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship

The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship funding is limited to tuition and fees associated with a Summer I program. Please note that the application for the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship is incorporated in the Need-Based Scholarship application.  Additional questions for consideration of the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship are optional. Applications will be scored based on the criteria listed below.

AWARD AMOUNT VARIES: Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship is limited to tuition, registration and course fee(s) for the individual program a student is participating in.  The award may not be applied to other study abroad program fees.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the merit-based and need-based scholarship(s).

  • Demonstration of Financial Need which requires completion of the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you need assistance completing the form, please visit the Financial Aid Office. You should file a FAFSA by February 1, 2014 (at least 30 days before the study abroad scholarship deadline of March 2, 2014).
  • Grant is open to all students but focuses on student of color and/or under-represented populations participating in MCC's study abroad programs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. See acceptable documents to establish lawful presence (www.maricopa.edu/residency/lawfulpresdocs.php).

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Online Application Open

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is happy to announce that the online application system is now open for students participating in study abroad programs during the Summer 2014, Fall 2014 or 2014-2015 Academic Year terms.
