Presidents' Honors Scholarship Program

The Presidents’ Honors Scholarship covers in-state/in-county tuition up to 15 credit hours (plus the $15 registration fee) for four consecutive semesters (must meet eligibility at the conclusion of each semester), excluding summer sessions.  The award does not cover additional class fees, books, private instruction, or music lessons. By applying for the Presidential Scholarship, the student also applies for the Honors Program.

Eligibility

  • Have a legal presence in the United States.
  • Enroll at Mesa Community College within the academic year (two academic semesters) following high school graduation without having attended another accredited college or university.

Pathways to receive the scholarship:

  • Class Rank

    • Graduate in the top 20 percent of an NCA-accredited Maricopa County high school class in the sixth, seventh, or eighth semester
    • AND at the time of application, have either tested into
      • At least ENG 101 (Write Placer score of 5+),
      • At least MAT 120 (College-level score of 32+ OR Elementary Algebra score of 70+)
      • At least CRE 101 (Accuplacer score of 74+),
    • OR have successfully completed, at an MCCCD college, the requisite coursework to be prepared for placement into ENG 101, MAT 120, and CRE 101

  • Placement Test Scores

    • Completion of a secondary education program in a Maricopa County high school with a final cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher
    • AND the following scores on the Maricopa Community College placement tests:
      • English: WritePlacer score of 6 or higher;
      • Reading: Exemption from CRE101 (score of 92+)
      • Math: Placement in MAT120 or higher (College-level score of 32+ OR Elementary Algebra score of 70+)
  • Home Schooled Students
    • Maricopa County home schooled students with verification from parents
    • AND the following scores on the Maricopa Community College placement tests:
      • English: WritePlacer score of 6 or higher;
      • Reading: Exemption from CRE101 (score of 92+)
      • Math: Placement in MAT120 or higher (College-level score of 32+ OR Elementary Algebra score of 70+)
  • GED Graduates
    • GED graduates are eligible for the scholarship through placement scores (see above for testing entrance) if the GED was completed prior to the individual’s 19th birthday.

Required Application Materials: 

  • A signed MCCCD Presidents’ Honors Scholarship Agreement.
  • An official final semester high school transcript must be sent via U.S. mail to the Honors Program at Mesa Community College.  It must be impressed and sealed by the high school and show your graduation date, class rank, and final cumulative grade point average.
  • Your scholarship cannot be awarded until your final transcript has been received.
  • Dependents of MCCCD employees should inquire about relationship between scholarship and employee benefits.
  • Please note: Only those with a lawful presence in the US may qualify for MCCCD scholarships or federal financial aid.  Any information you provide about your legal status when you apply for financial aid or scholarships may be subject to mandatory reporting to federal immigration authorities under Arizona law. State law now requires that a person who is not a citizen or legal resident of the United States or who is without lawful immigration status is not entitled to classification as an in-state student pursuant to A.R.S. Section 15-1802 or entitled to classification as a county resident pursuant to A.R.S. Section 15-1802.01.

To retain the Presidents' Honors Scholarship, students must:

  • Maintain continuous enrollment as a full-time student for the four consecutive semesters.
  • Complete at least 24 letter-graded credits at the 100 level or above (Pass/Fail excluded) each academic year.  (A degree specific, required pass/fail courses may be within retention guidelines; must be verified with Honors Program).
  • Enroll in and complete at least 12, letter-graded, credits each fall and spring semester.
  • Enroll in and complete, with a grade of “C” or higher, at least 3 credits of Honors coursework/contract each semester.
  • Maintain an MCCCD cumulative grade-point-average of 3.25 or higher after the first semester.
  • Complete required co-curricular activities as defined by the college Honors Program.
  • Students will not be eligible for renewal of the scholarship if their cumulative Maricopa GPA, including ALL credits, is below 3.0 at the end of the first semester.
  • Participate in a mandatory Honors Orientation at the beginning of the first semester
  • NOTE: Honors Program students should not withdraw from courses or alter class schedules without first consulting the Honors Program.  College refund, drop/add, and withdrawal policies, dates, and deadlines apply to all Honors Program students.

How scholarship is disbursed

Presidents' Honors Scholars will have their fee due date on their billing statement deferred until financial aid is awarded. At that time, provided all necessary paperwork is completed and the student is enrolled in an honors course, the scholarship amount will be applied to the student's account. Students must pay any fees over the scholarship amount by the date on the billing statement.

Graduation

To graduate from the Honors Program, a student must be eligible to graduate from the college and must meet the additional requirements that include a 3.5 MCCCD cumulative district-wide grade point average, completion of fifteen (15) credit hours in Honors coursework.                                                                                                      Graduation requirement change: any student starting on the Presidential Honors Scholarship prier to Fall 2014 must complete one credit of Service Learning to meet the graduation requirements. Students starting Fall 2014 must complete two (2) co-curricular activities per semester as defined by the college. 

Deferments

Presidents' Honors Scholars who have been admitted to the Honors Program and college may apply for the deferment of their Presidents' Honors Scholarship for the purpose of taking part in activities that would interrupt their required continuous enrollment at the Maricopa Community Colleges.
