The Desert Echoes Flute Project concert, “Temperaments", features alto flute soloist Christina Steffen and bass flute soloist Sherry Finzer. The title of the concert is taken from a multi-movement piece by Daniel Kessner that one of the groups is performing on all alto flutes! The program also includes Kessner's sophisticated "Symphony in Gold" for alto and bass flutes, Bob Freedman’s jazz ballad, "On the Other World” and his "Awareness Incoming” (composed for DEFproject), and “Illuminations” by Nancy Nourse, a beautiful piece based on the plainsong "Divinum Mysterium” for bass flutes and contrabass flute. This portion of the concert is in anticipation of the program being presented by a DEF members at the International Low Flutes Festival in April. DEFproject was selected to perform as one of the top flute choirs and the repertoire reflects an emphasis on the low flutes.
The Community Flute Choir will be playing Kelly Via’s rousing "Fanfare 36”; "Pop" by Gary Shocker, which does sound quite like an older pop tune written for flute choir; a J.S. Bach "Prelude and Fugue" transcribed by Anne McGinty; and Alexandra Molnar-Suhadja's “Talisman”, written for the 2015 Opening Concert of the National Flute Association Convention. The concert closes with the 50 flutists of DEF playing the fun, groove-based "Flourishes" by Kathy Farmer.
