Mesa Community College Music Department present Desert Echoes Flute Project Concert

Join the flutists of Desert Echoes Flute Project in a slightly spooky concert on Friday the 13^th of October. The DEF Community Flute Choir presents an arrangement of the early twentieth-century fun-spooky Halloween Dance by composer Hans Engelmann; one of Jonathan Cohen’s newest pieces, Bancroft’s Castle, about the ruins of castle that was never more than a tower and a bungalow and the fantasies General Bancroft might have imagined as he dreamt of his castle that never was; and Beeftink’s fast-paced and amusing Squirrels. DEFproject opens their program with One Day in November by Sin Young Park. The composer’s notes state that she wanted to “describe the passage of time in Fall, especially November. Some people get sentimental during the Fall because it is the season when leaves are falling and the wind blows awkwardly. I captured the feeling of loneliness and emptiness during this season of chilly winds.” Next is Linda Kirkpatrick’s arrangement of Dvorák’s Vodník (Themes from the Water Goblin) based on Czech poet Erbe’s ballad of a sinister water goblin and the tragic story of the maiden he captures in a lake, followed by the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by J.S. Bach with its classic association with Halloween.

The concert opens with the Chamber Choir performing Melange of Neumes, a delightful and whimsical four-movement piece by Stephen Lias and you won’t want to miss the combined low flute choir of alto, bass, and four(!) contrabass flutes playing Owl Prowl by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda.
