MCC Student Wants to Inspire Youth

Mesa Community College student Cynthia G. Walker knows what it takes to succeed in a challenging world. As she prepares to graduate with an associate’s degree from MCC this month, she would like to encourage others to pursue their education.

“If I can reach just one individual, they can take that information and teach others,” said Walker, who is a member of the Diné and Cochiti tribes.

Walker has overcome challenges to get to where she is today. She grew up in an unstable family environment and left home at age 18. At that time, she decided to enter college and discovered a supportive environment at MCC’s American Indian Center.

“The vibe they give off at the center is really neat,” Walker said. “Bo Colbert, Loretta Damon, Jackson Harris and Yvonne Honeyestewa really helped me a lot. Instructor Eddie Webb also helped. They are so welcoming and interact with you. It’s a good feeling when you walk in.”

In addition to membership in Phi Theta Kappa and many academic accomplishments during her time at MCC, Walker is also proud of her work with youth as the Phoenix Metro Coordinator for the Arizona Police Athletic League. She works with at-risk youth through athletic events, camping and other activities.

Walker, a secondary education major, would like to continue with this work by accomplishing a goal she has to host a youth leadership conference in Window Rock during the 4th of July weekend.

“I’d like to give back to my community,” Walker said. “I want to inspire and motivate youth to do well in life. I’d like to help people become balanced individuals and equip them with the right tools to be successful and let them know there are people out there who care.”

Walker plans to transfer to the University of Arizona to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

As she picks up her graduation gown and prepares to take part in the MCC commencement on May 14, she knows what an accomplishment it is.

“It’s a milestone,” Walker said. “It was extremely difficult to get to this point. I’m extremely grateful. I know there are other accomplishments ahead of me, but this is big.”
