MESA, Ariz. Sept. 24, 2024 -- A forum to meet the candidates in the upcoming Mesa mayoral race open to students and faculty of Mesa Community College (MCC) and the general public is scheduled from noon-2 p.m. Oct. 2. The event will be held in the MCC Library, room LB145, on the Southern and Dobson Campus,1833 W. Southern Ave., Mesa.
The Your Mesa, Your Voice Mayoral Candidate Forum is being sponsored by the Associated Students of Mesa Community College (ASMCC), an organization working to advance the needs and interests of students by promoting and maintaining a democratic form of student government.
“We want to get young voters to participate in local politics and be informed about our community,” said Ethan Hammons, the new executive vice president of ASMCC. “We should know our future leaders on a conversational basis and this event will make that conversation possible.”
Candidates Mark Freeman and Scott Smith will give brief introductions, discuss their platforms regarding the future of Mesa and the critical issues the city faces and respond to questions from the audience. Beth Ann Wright, MCC Student Life lead manager, will offer closing remarks. An informal meet and greet session where guests can visit with candidates individually to ask questions that matter to them will follow the forum. Refreshments will be served.
Hammons encourages students to attend the event to learn how each candidate will support students and young professionals as they work toward a brighter future for the city. “As members of the MCC community, our voices matter. Mesa’s future will be shaped by those who lead and this is our opportunity to make sure our concerns and ideas are heard.”
