MESA, Arizona – Mesa Community College’s ariZoni award-winning Act I Musical Productions will present the Broadway musical Hairspray as its inaugural Music Theatre performance in MCC’s new Performing Arts Center. Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, is set in 1960s Baltimore and is based on the film written and directed by John Waters. The production features an original score by Academy Award-nominated Marc Shaiman, with lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
In Hairspray, it's 1962 — the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion — to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray!
MCC’s Hairspray is produced by SueAnne Lucius, Chair of the college’s Music Department. The show runs November 13 – 22 in MCC’s new, 500-seat Performing Arts Center, 1833 W. Southern Avenue, Mesa, AZ, 85202. Performances are November 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and November 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.
