MESA, Ariz. -- Sept. 19, 2024 -- The City of Mesa’s second anniversary as the 362nd International City of Peace will be celebrated at the Mesa Community College 2024 International Peace Pole rededication at 3 p.m. Sept. 26 in the MCC Rose Garden,1833 W. Southern Ave., Mesa.
Event sponsors, in addition to Mesa and MCC, include the City of Mesa Police Department, Children’s Benefit Foundation Inc., Rotary International and St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
Open to the public, the program will begin with an opening prayer by Jolyon Clarke of the Chandler Baha’i community and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mesa City Councilmember Jenn Duff (Area 4). MCC President Richard Daniel, Ph.D., and Mesa Vice Mayor Francisco Heredia will each welcome guests followed by Mesa Fire Chief Mary Cameli who will read the Week Without Violence proclamation. Mesa Police Department Lt. William Peters will provide inspirational quotes and Susan Stevens-Clarke of the Chandler Horizon Rotary Club will read the peace pole rededication. Also among the speakers is Dr. Ruth Tan Lim.
The MCC International Peace Pole was first dedicated in 2013 and represents the ideals of International Peace Day (Sept. 21) which recognizes the individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. The peace pole is engraved with the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in the language of the country in which it is displayed. Considered monuments to peace, there currently are more than 200,000 peace poles worldwide.
Guests attending the event are asked to enter the campus from Southern Avenue at Rose Garden Way and proceed to the west section of the rose garden.
