MESA, Ariz. – Mesa Community College's Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi Eta (SCH) took home the Raymie E. McKerrow Chapter of the Year award at the organization’s 100th national convention in Chicago last month. Sigma Chi Eta is the official community college honor society of the National Communication Association.
This is the third time MCC’s Chapter has won the award in the past four years. The award recognizes the Chapter which best exemplifies the goals of Sigma Chi Eta as outlined in the National Constitution.
MCC Sigma Chi Eta student officers accompanied their faculty advisor, Puvana Ganesan, and co-advisor, Amanda Houdashell, to Chicago to receive the award and represent MCC in panel presentations.
Ganesan said, “We are very proud to represent MCC at the national level and bring home this prestigious award. Our success is a clear reflection of the caliber of students and leaders we foster here at MCC. Their creativity, strong work ethic, and drive to make a difference elevate our Upsilon chapter to national recognition year after year.”
MCC’s very active Upsilon Chapter has fundraised and awarded $3,000 in scholarships to members since 2009. In spring of 2014, the Chapter inducted 26 new members.
The group encourages members to participate in service learning projects in which students connect with the local community. Members help organize the annual Halloween Extravaganza at MCC’s Red Mountain Campus, volunteer at Children First Academy of Tempe and host a Homeless Children’s School, among other activities.
The Chapter encourages professional development with a variety of communication workshops, with topics that include speech presentation, diversity, leadership and conflict styles.
