MESA, Ariz. – Student artwork from Mesa Community College is on display at the Wolfswinkel Education Center at the Phoenix Art Museum for the month of December. The works of five oil painting students, Kyle Mulcahy, Barbara Schild, Angelica Sepulveda (Tempe), Mike Bonar (Mesa), and James Withee (Mesa), are exhibited. The students worked under the direction of MCC instructor Cynthia Peterson.
Peterson said the students are mostly advanced students who have studied with her since their beginning classes. They learn basic techniques by painting still life and studying historical painters, then move on to more advanced methods and individual ideas.
"I congratulate all the student artists who worked hard to take part in this opportunity,” Peterson said. “The students are encouraged to find their own voice and subject matter. Many of them are very interested in figurative/portrait painting and take inspiration from their own relationships.”
MCC student Angelica Sepulveda, a Tempe resident, said her inspiration comes from the children in her life, including her 2 children and her nieces and nephews. Her work is on exhibit at the Tempe Library now through Jan. 14, as well as at the Phoenix Art Museum.
“Kids are the best part of the world—they’re the future,” Sepulveda, 42, said. “Their expressions inspire me. They may be sad or anxious, but there is still happiness.”
The “Peterson Group Painters” display runs through the month of December at the Phoenix Art Museum, located at 1625 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix.
