You Can’t Take it with You opens the Mesa Community College Theatre Season

MESA, Ariz. -- Sept. 27, 2024 -- Mesa Community College Theatre Department opens its season in October with a classic American comedy, George S. Kaufman’s You Can’t Take it with You. This charming production is a stalwart of the American repertory, and the MCC production promises to be visually stunning and hilarious.

Directed by Chelsea Anderson of the Phoenix Theatre Company, the MCC production is designed scenically by Kara Thomson, MCC’s resident design faculty and Emmy Award winner. This dynamic team promises to stage a production that will bring out the heart of this classic play.

Centering on the story of the Vanderhof family, a family whose eccentricity extends to connecting with equally eccentric people, Kaufman’s play explores the disconnect between wealth and happiness. When young Alice Vanderhof falls in love with Tony, the son of a Wall Street executive, the family’s eccentricities are challenged and the nature of happiness and joy are questioned. In the end, Grandpa brings the voice of reason to the chaos and love and joy triumph.

With a cast of nearly 20 student performers from across the Valley who are costumed by Ashley Gamba, the play is staged with incredible spectacle and style.

Performances are Oct. 4-5 and 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are Oct. 5 and 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13 for the general public and $10 for students, seniors and veterans. High school students can get a $5 rush ticket on the night of any performance with a valid school ID. You Can’t Take it with You will be performed in the MCC Theatre, 1833 W. Southern Ave., Mesa.
