The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Early Childhood Education - Dual Language is designed to prepare individuals for employment in early childhood professions in dual language educational settings. The Bachelor`s degree includes advanced instruction in child development, curriculum design and development, theory and practice in the education of young children, and the intersections of family, community, and learning and development for dual language learners. Upon completion of the Bachelor’s of Arts, students may work as teachers of children from birth to third grade. The BA in Early Childhood Education - Dual Language degree provides a pathway for students seeking Arizona Department of Education Early Childhood Teacher Certification (Birth - Age 8 or Grade 3) with an endorsement in Bilingual Education and/or English as a Second Language. Certificates of Completion (CCL) in Foundation of Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Education, as well as the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Early Childhood Education are also available and embedded within the Bachelor’s of Arts.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses within the program.

For some employment and field experiences (including internship courses), students will be required to have a current Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card and a current TB test.

Students currently on a pathway to receive an Associate in Arts with an Emphasis in Early Childhood Education who are interested in pursuing the Bachelor’s of Arts in Early Childhood Education - Dual Language should consult with a faculty or academic advisor to determine courses needed to best align with this program.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Create relevant, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that celebrate, respect, and develop the heritage language and English language proficiencies of children from infancy to age eight.
  2. Cultivate reciprocal, respectful, culturally responsive relationships with diverse and multilingual families and communities that promote children`s awareness of and belief about self in multiple contexts.
  3. Synthesize current early childhood education standards, professional codes of ethics, reflective practices, and research in order to advocate for an equitable, diverse, and effective early childhood education profession.
  4. Design developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote growth and development in multiple domains (physical, cognitive, socioemotional, language) with typically and atypically developing children.
  5. Employ interpersonal skills and practices to create a professional identity focused on curiosity as well as innovative and collaborative problem solving that elevates the belief all children can learn.
  6. Implement evidence-based strategies of language development and assessment in early childhood dual language settings that encourage the development of language skills and proficiencies in more than one language.
  7. Design meaningful developmentally-appropriate learning experiences that include structured language immersion strategies based on differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students and families.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College.
