MTC101 Introduction to Music Theory 3 Credits

Designed to develop written and aural skills necessary for advanced study of music theory and skills. Recommended for music majors. Prerequisites: None.

Course Notes: MTC101 is an introductory course designed for those with little or no previous musical knowledge. If you are unsure of where to begin, take the Music Theory Placement Recommendation Exam at www.mc.maricopa.edu/music. Bring score printout with you to advisement. Many programs of study that require MTC101 will also accept the more advanced MTC105 as a substitute. Check with your advisor.

MTC105 Music Theory I 3 Credits

The chronological study of music theory including: harmony, melody, texture, structure and timbre through analysis, original compositions and basic exercises to demonstrate musical concepts.

Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in MTC101 or permission of instructor. Corequisites: MTC106.

Course Notes: MTC105 requires the following competencies: Ability to read bass and treble clef notes, ability to draw all major and minor key signatures and scales, ability to identify all intervals, basic chord qualities and basic rhythmic patterns and meters. All music majors and others interested in MTC105 can take the Music Theory Placement Recommendation Exam at www.mc.maricopa.edu/music. Corequisite is MTC106.
