Our three-person jury team, Brooke Foust, Kimberly Light, and Rembrandt Quiballo, had the difficult job of reviewing 381 artwork submissions from 151 students.
Meet Brooke Foust
Brooke Foust was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. She earned her BFA and BSEd from Northern Arizona University and, for the past 16 years, has been teaching high school art in Mesa. Initially trained in traditional drawing and painting, her true passion is working with clay. Although making art is an excellent source of joy, her heart lies with teaching.
"I thoroughly enjoyed jurying this exhibition. The artworks included in this show demonstrated strong foundations in technique as well as design. I was specifically impressed with the range of mediums students chose. Narrowing down the submissions was difficult; even more challenging was selecting the award recipients. I want to thank the MCC Gallery for inviting me to be a co-juror for the MCC Student Art show."
Meet Kimberly Light
Since opening her first gallery in 1992 on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles, Kimberly Light has provided critical and steady support to emerging California and international artists. Light closed her La Brea gallery and moved to San Francisco in 1995. While residing in the Bay Area, she served on the boards of the Capp Street Project and the San Francisco Art Institute and was an active participant in the Collectors’ Forum of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
In 2001, Kimberly opened LightProject, a non-profit foundation. LightProject sponsored many successful projects, including Fischerspooner’s three-night performance at The Standard in Downtown Los Angeles. She went on to establish her gallery and art advising business, Kim Light / LightBox, in 2005. Simultaneously, operating the LA gallery, she traveled to NYC to get her Masters Degree in Contemporary Art History and Theory at Sotheby’s Institute. She specializes in art advising, collection management, and independent curatorial projects.
It was my honor to have the opportunity to be a judge for the MCC 2020 student art exhibition. As a new resident of Arizona, the online exhibition served as an initial view into the creative community here in AZ. I greatly enjoyed the breadth of the many ideas, works, and moving images. I have always believed that art is the seminal key to knowing our world. Art serves us in better learning, expanding the brain, and creates a lasting lens into our society for the past, present, and future. I thank all of the students for their hard work and dedication to their practice. Keep pushing yourselves to be the best you can be. Congratulations to all!
Meet Rembrandt Quiballo
Rembrandt Quiballo is a visual artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. Through the moving image, his work explores mass media and its effects on social and political history. Quiballo was born in the city of Manila in the Philippines. Social and political unrest would compel his family to leave the country, eventually immigrating to the United States. Quiballo received a BFA in Painting and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Arizona. He continued his education at Arizona State University, earning his MFA in Photography. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Albuquerque, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Cairo, and Berlin.
"It was an honor and a pleasure to have judged the 2020 Art Student Show at MCC Art Gallery. It was great to see the breadth and talent of the student body. The artistic potential and creative output from aspiring artists are the foundation of our creative culture. We must realize the importance of art in lives early on before the burden of every day takes over. Viewing the work was an inspiration and a much-needed reprieve from our turbulent times."
