Out of State Speakers

Deborah L. Harrington is the Dean of Student Success for the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and the Executive Director and Project Administrator for the California Community Colleges’ Success Network (3CSN). 3CSN’s communities of practice, including its Reading Apprenticeship Project (RAP) and California Acceleration Project (CAP), are nationally recognized as research-driven initiatives resulting in significant increases in student achievement. With extensive experience teaching and administering during the past three decades, Dr. Harrington has additionally served as Writing Center Director, Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. She serves on several statewide committees including the Advisory Committee on Legislation and the Basic Skills Advisory Committee, and she is a member of the Leadership Team for LearningWorks, a center designed to link policy and practice in California’s community colleges.

Erick Hofacker has been teaching in the University of Wisconsin System for 18 years.  He teaches mathematics courses in the areas of Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics.  He coordinates the Mathematics Education program at UW-River Falls, preparing future middle and high school mathematics teachers.  Erick has worked with over 200 teachers in Western WI to provide professional development in the areas of:  using technology, improving content knowledge, and using best practices in the classroom.  He is currently the Principal Investigator on his second Mathematics-Science-Partnership (MSP) grant.  This project works with over 90 K-12 math teachers to explore the progression of mathematical learning at the different grade levels, while emphasizing the mathematical practice standards in the tasks we engage our students with.  Erick’s current interests in mathematics education are:  integrating emerging technologies, orchestrating productive discourse, mathematical modeling, and the use of different formative assessment strategies.
