Quick Guide To Open Entry

What is Open Entry?

Open-Entry classes provide students with a convenient and flexible way to take college credits without traditional classroom instruction. Students can work at their own pace on business or personal computer applications online, at home or in an open computer lab environment. There are no regularly scheduled classes or lectures.

What is the advantage of taking Open Entry Classes?

The advantage of Open Entry is that you don’t have to wait until the next semester to start another class. If you finish a class, you may enroll in another class the following Monday as long there are start dates remaining for that semester, otherwise, you will want to register for the next semester.

How do I sign up for Open Entry Classes?

Open Entry classes have flexible start dates and the end dates do not crossover semester boundaries. You will receive a specific start date and end date to complete your assignments. http://www.mesacc.edu/enroll/

You can complete an Open Entry class as quickly as you can do the work. However, it is important to note that even though you may complete the class early, you must complete the required work by your assigned end date.

How much time do I have to complete my class?

  • Students enrolled in half credit classes receive 8 weeks to complete all required assignments from the assigned start date.
  • Students enrolled in one credit classes receive 8 weeks to complete all required assignments from the assigned start date.
  • Students enrolled in three credit classes receive 14 weeks to complete all required assignments from the assigned start date.

How do I start?

The first step is to enroll in your class. Once you are enrolled, please reach out to Enrollment Services or our CIS Administrative Assistants DL-MC-CIS-OFFICESTAFF@mesacc.edu and we will send you the start-up information.

What will I need?

Software

For most Open Entry classes, students will need Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019 loaded on their computer or laptop to complete assignments. Microsoft Office 365 is available to currently enrolled students for FREE. Contact Open Entry for more information.

Internet Access

You will need to have an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are numerous companies that offer Internet access. DSL or Broadband connections are recommended.

A Maricopa Email Account

You must use your GoogleApps@Maricopa account for all school related emails.

Are there computer labs on campus where I can do my work?

The Multi-Use Computer lab is available to Open Entry students at the Southern/Dobson campus in building #40, room BA3E. If you are working at the Red Mountain campus (Power Road East of McKellips), there is a lab in the Library.

Do I need a textbook?

Some of the Open Entry classes use a textbook except for CIS131AA, Doing Business on the Internet and some do not require any textbooks but instead use OER materials.

How are assignments submitted?

Open Entry uses Canvas as our online course management tool. All of the assignments quizzes and final projects are in Canvas. You do not have to come to campus if you are taking Open Entry classes.

How is testing completed?

All testing for Open Entry classes is online in Canvas. You do not have to come to the campus to take an exam.

How can I be successful in my Open Entry class?

In the virtual classroom, communication is often written, so it is critical that students feel comfortable in expressing themselves in writing. You must be able to communicate through writing. Be self-motivated & self-disciplined - with the freedom and flexibility of the online environment comes responsibility. The online process takes a real commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the class. The online learning process is normally accelerated and requires commitment on the student's part. Staying up with the class and completing all work on time is vital. The best way to keep up with the required assignments and quizzes and complete on time is to avoid procrastination.

What skills are required to take an Open Entry class?

To successfully complete an Open Entry class, you will need some basic computer skills. If you are registered for an online course, it is assumed that you have the basic computer skills necessary for participating in and completing the class.

Is online learning right for me?

Be realistic about your computer skills and computer access. You will be expected to use standard Internet tools such as a Web browser and email, and may be required to download and install additional software on your computer.

Be comfortable with a self-learning environment.

Have good time management skills. You should be able to schedule your time effectively and to stay on task to complete assignments.
