Mesa Community College is taking Black History Month to a new level, by not limiting the celebration to just the month of February, but rather celebrating the history and accomplishments throughout the year of 2021. Miss an event? Not to worry, we have a recap of all of our events below:

The Life and Times of African Americans - February 4, 2021

The Life and Times of African AmericansMCC Sociology Professor, Rod Golden, led a virtual presentation and discussion on The Life and Times of African Americans, which included "African American Contributions Amongst Civil Rights Flashpoints: A Story of Purpose and Progress."

The presentation focused on the Civil Rights Movement and the contributions African Americans have made to science, medicine, and public health. The opportunity was available to students and employees.

The Langston Hughes Project - February 10, 2021

In celebration of African-American/Black History Month, Mesa Community College, in conjunction with Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Scottsdale Community College, hosted a virtual multimedia performance of Langston Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite, “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz” featuring Dr. Ron McCurdy.

Community Resilience: Queer. Black. Trans.- February 2, 2021

Monica Jones, Executive Director of the Outlaw Project, will lead a panel discussion on Blackness, Queerness, and Trans Identities. Guest panelists will share their intersectional experiences with the audience.

Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?- February 25, 2021

A year following the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Rev Dr. Martin Luther King posed the question, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" Today, we find ourselves in a similar moment as a country amid our current social and political climate. Join Richard Crews as he leads us in an interactive discussion paralleling our past to our present and ultimately challenging those in attendance to answer the question, Where Do We Go From Here? Will We Choose Chaos or Community?

Jimmy Scott is an alumni of Mesa Community College and owns and operates a business called Native Diagnostic Imaging. Mr. Scott will speak to the Entrepreneur Club about his business journey and experiences being a black business owner. All are welcome to attend!

Speaker: Cloves Campbell, Jr.- Tuesday, April 6, 2021


Cloves Campbell, Jr. has spent his entire career with the Arizona Informant Newspaper, a family owned and operated publication in its 48th year of publishing. As its publisher, the newspaper provides an important voice for the Arizona African American community. Mr. Campbell is active in many civic and business organizations. Currently, he is the executive director for Arizona Commission of African American Affairs.

Speaker: Alicia Scott- Thursday, April 8, 2021


Alicia Scott is the Senior Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Talent at ON Semiconductor. During this event, Ms. Scott will be discussing STEAM field jobs and being a woman of color in her field. In her role as an engineer, she is striving to change the oppressive language in the Engineering world. Stay tuned for more information.

In honor of the Black History Year at MCC & Pride Month, we will be viewing a documentary about Marsha P. Johnson. Marsha was an activist, self-identified drag queen, performer, and survivor. She was a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. The “P” stood for “Pay It No Mind.” We will have a discussion after the documentary.
