English Week 2 Day 1

Integrating reading and writing practicesDr. Cheryl Hogue-Smith, from Kingsborough Community College in NY, spoke on “Writing through Reading: Addressing Obstacles to Academic Literacy” at this year’s Foundations for Student Success English Summer Institute.

Dr. Hogue-Smith’s interactive workshop integrated reading and writing practices to make both less intimidating to developmental education students.

One of the many points Dr. Hogue-Smith made was that students need to read with a clear purpose in mind to help them stay connected to the flow of ideas, especially with difficult texts, or it becomes too easy for them to lose their attention and fail to decipher the essential point of the reading.

This is true for most people but especially true for students who struggle with reading comprehension.
